According to a report from CNN, Osama bin Laden – who was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan – resisted the assault on his compound in Abbotabad, Pakistan.
Abbotabad is about 100 kilometers away from Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. President Obama had heightened U.S. forces in Pakistan in the hopes of capturing or killing Osama bin Laden, and the effort has finally paid off.
President Obama addressed the nation in a speech declaring the death of the man behind the 9/11 attacks – the the most deadly act of terrorism on American soil in U.S. history.
President Obama stressed that the fight against terrorists such as Osama bin Laden is not a fight against Islam.
"Tonight I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that has killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda," said Obama on Sunday May 1.
According to CNN, Osama bin Laden was shot in the head by a "U.S. military asset."
It was reported that Osama bin Laden still looked recognizable and had not changed his appearance in order to avoid being recognized.
According to the New York Times, it is not yet known what has happened to Ayman al-Zawahiri, the person who is second in line to lead Al Qaeda – bin Laden's terrorist group.
The news source reports that there is a large Pakistani military presence in the city of Abbottabad, where bin Laden was found. He was not hiding in distant areas but was only one hour away from the capital city of Pakistan.
Crowds have been rejoicing at the news in Washington D.C. and New York. However, CNN reports that radical posts have already surfaced online where members say that they will avenge the death of the "martyr" bin Laden.
