Lawsuit has beef with legitimacy of Taco Bell’s meat

Fast food retailer Taco Bell is defending itself against claims brought against it by a class action lawsuit that maintains that its ground beef product is not made of real meat. The company announced on Tuesday that it would take legal action in response to the accusations.

"We are proud of the quality of our beef and identify all the seasoning and spice ingredients on our website. Unfortunately, the lawyers in this case elected to sue first and ask questions later – and got their 'facts' absolutely wrong. We plan to take legal action for the false statements being made about our food," Taco Bell president Greg Creed said in an online statement.

Creed maintained that Taco Bell buys its meat from the same sources that major supermarket brands do, using Tyson as a comparison.

Meanwhile, Alabama law firm Beasley Allen is suing Taco Bell on the basis that only 36 percent of its meat product is actually comprised of beef, which falls short of USDA requirements, The Globe and Mail reports.

Beasley Allen is charging that the rest of the meat is made of "filler" substances such as "isolated oat product," though it maintained that the meat advertised as chicken and carne asada was legitimate, Reuters reports.

According to the news source, Beasley Allen has pointed out that Taco Bell employees call it "taco meat filling" inside the kitchen but call it "beef" around customers.

The lawsuit was filed last week in a California federal court and asks that the fast food retailer launch a "corrective advertising campaign," the news source reports.

Taco Bell has more than 5,600 locations around the U.S.
