Representative Chris Lee (R-NY) resigns over Craigslist scandal

by Adam Russett on February 10, 2011

Representative Chris Lee of New York's 26th District immediately resigned on Wednesday, February 9, after a Craigslist posting featuring a shirtless picture of him flexing in the mirror surfaced on the popular gossip website Gawker.com.

"I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents," he said in a statement. "I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. … I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness."

Forty-six-year-old Lee is married and has one child, but that's not what he advertised to a 34-year-old woman who was looking for a date on the networking site. Additionally, he didn't tell the truth about his occupation.

"Hope I'm not a toad. :) i'm a very fit fun classy guy," he wrote in one email. "6ft 190lbs blond/blue. 39. Lobbyist. I promise not to disappoint." He went on to say that he was divorced.

The emails were divulged by the female correspondent after she searched for him online and found that he hadn't been truthful with the information. Details on the issue remain hazy, as Lee recently told FOX News that he had to work things out with his wife before he could comment further, according to New York Daily News.

Lee lives in the Buffalo, New York, area and won his seat in 2008. Now, Governor David Cuomo will have to hold a special election to fill the vacant seat.

Many of Lee's legislative practices have already come into scrutiny, as he attempted to block the Zadroga 9/11 health bill in late 2010, which ended up helping injured first responders who had chronic conditions due to emergency work during September 11.

The news source reports that one story published in Roll Call magazine stated that Lee was reprimanded last year by House GOP leader John Boehner for "inappropriately hanging out with female lobbyists."
