A Yoplait commercial featuring a woman debating whether or not to have a slice of cheesecake has been removed, due to fears that the ad would normalize behaviors prevalent in people with anorexia or bulimia according to a new report from the Huffington Post.
The Vice President of Corporate Communications for General Mills Tom Forsythe explained the decision to remove the ad.
"We had no idea," Forsythe told the news source. "The thought had never occurred to anyone, and no one raised the point. We aren't sure that everyone saw the ad that way, but if anyone did, that was not our intent and is cause for concern. We thought it best to take it down."
Lynn Grefe, the president of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), told the news outlet about some of the implications of a commercial such as Yoplait's. "[T]o see this behavior in a commercial tells people with eating disorders, see, it's even on TV. It's ok and normal for my head to go through all these mental exercises," said Grefe.
In the ad, a slim woman with glasses is seen standing in front of an open fridge, debating whether or not to eat cheesecake. Her internal monologue rationalizes that she can exercise more if she indulges in the cake. When another woman, supposedly a coworker, comes to the fridge, the slightly taller and more stylish colleague reaches for a Raspberry Cheesecake Yoplait Lite and remarks that she has lost weight. She swiftly and confidently walks away, prompting the woman with glasses to reach out and grab a Yoplait Lite as well.
