"We are not together anymore. It's very difficult and very personal, and we hope everyone can respect our privacy," reads a joint statement from George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis.
The American actor and Italian actress split after two years together.
Clooney is notorious for being a lady's man and having an aversion to marriage. Canalis, however, seemed happy with the relationship and told the Italian press earlier this month, "I am very happy at the moment thanks to my man and my fairytale is continuing.”
At the same time, she spoke about marriage and asserted her expectations for relationships and the future.
"I am a firm believer in marriage, in the future I will be married. But for the time being I am as happy as I am, I don't need anything to confirm how happy I am," she said to Chi Magazine.
George Clooney has a string of former girlfriends, including Sarah Larson, Baywatch actress Krista Allen, model Lisa Snowdon, French Celine Balitran, actress Kelly Preston, reports CNN Marquee. Clooney was married once to Talia Balsam, for three years, after which he said, "I was married. I gave it a shot," according to The Telegraph.
Clooney had a bet with actresses Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer that the actor would remarry and have a child by the time he was 40. The starting bet was at $10,000 each, and when the women lost, they each sent him a check. Clooney promptly returned the money and bet them double or nothing that he would not be a father by age 50.
Clooney turned 50 in May of this year and his bet with Pfeiffer that he will never remarry now stands at $100,000, according to Agence France Press.
On Canalis' part, the 32-year-old Italian has reportedly said the following: "I could never be with someone who every time he opens his mouth says he doesn't want a child with me or to marry me."
