Comedy Central to debut Onion SportsDome

by Shannon Harris on January 11, 2011

The Onion has made a name for itself in pop culture by lampooning everything from politics to entertainment through its phony news website and publications, but on Tuesday, the satiric organization debuts its first foray into television with Comedy Central's Onion SportsDome. The show is meant to be a parody of ESPNs SportsCenter, and comes just weeks before the debut of the Onion News Network on IFC, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The move to TV is not surprising given the fact that the newspaper's website has generated considerable traffic since it started producing short videos in 2007. Since the addition of the video segments to their website, the company claims that viewership of their website has almost doubled to around 7.5 million unique visitors per month.

Each season is slated to have a 10 episode series with the option of being renewed. Though the company had received offers to film a TV show, and there was the poorly-reviewed "The Onion Movie" that released in 2008, it was not until the two high-profile networks expressed interest that the prospect of show became a reality. For Comedy Central, the decision to include the company was a no brainier

"Doing a comedy show in the sports world is a natural. There's no show like it around. And to be in business with The Onion, they're one of the sharpest satirical forces in our culture," Kent Alterman, Comedy Central's head of original programming and development, comma told the news source.

SportsDome will lead into The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and according to The New York Times, it's likely the program be well received by sports fans. However, given the over-the-top nature of the ESPN to begin with, former SportsCenter anchor and current MSNBC commentator Keith Olbermann iswondering if it can even be parodied at all.

"How could you parody it in the shape it’s in now?" he emailed the Times. "It's its own parody."
