Dexter co-stars Hall, Carpenter file for divorce

They play siblings on Showtime's hit show Dexter, but off the set Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter were husband and wife. However, the pair announced on Monday that they were getting a divorce after less than two years of marriage, Entertainment Weekly reports.

The 39-year-old Hall has gained substantial critical acclaim for his role as Dexter Morgan, an emotionally distant serial killer bound by a strict moral code who masquerades as a blood-spatter analyst during the day. Carpenter plays his adopted sister Debra, a homicide detective who works alongside the conflicted Dexter. The pair met on the set and were married on New Years Eve in 2008. Both sides say the split was mutual.

"Having been separated for some time, Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C. Hall have filed for divorce," their representatives said in a joint response to the publication.

The split comes as a surprise to many fans who are shocked to see them divorce after Carpenter stuck by Hall while he received treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma earlier this year.

The divorce also raises some concerns among followers of the popular series as to whether or not the pair will be able to work together in the recently announced sixth season. However there have been other instances in which co-stars have been able to return to work soon after getting divorced, most recently Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray continued to work together on One Tree Hill years after separating. Bush went on to date several other co-stars.

This marks the second divorce for Hall, who was married to actress Amy Spanger for four years. They separated in 2006. The fifth-season finale of Dexter aired on Sunday and on Tuesday, Hall received his fifth Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Drama.
