Justin Bieber’s Unusual Rise to Fame

by Nick on August 26, 2010

Pop sensation Justin Bieber was born on March 1, 1994 in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. He is an only child and, although he was raised by his single mother, Pattie Mallette, he still maintains contact with his biological father.

Bieber has always been musically inclined having taught himself how to play musical instruments such as the piano, drums, guitar and trumpet. He got his big break when he joined a local singing competition called “Stratford Idol”. Bieber sang Ne-Yo’s “So Sick” and ended up placing 2nd. Although he didn’t win the top prize, Bieber was immensely proud of this achievement because all the other contestants had been taking singing lessons whereas he had no training whatsoever and was just singing for fun.

Eager to share his success with friends and relatives, Bieber uploaded a clip of his award-winning performance onto YouTube, and it was through this clip that Bieber was discovered by Scooter Braun, a former executive of So So Def. Braun accidentally saw the video while searching for material by another performer. Impressed by what he saw and heard, Braun tracked down this young singer and managed to get in contact with Pattie Mallette. He asked if he could fly Bieber to the United States to record demo tapes and introduce the young singer to his colleagues. Although she initially had doubts, Pattie Mallette eventually allowed Bieber to fly with Braun to Atlanta, Georgia.

A week after Bieber arrived in Atlanta, he and Braun bumped into R&B singer/songwriter Usher. It was Usher who arranged for Bieber to audition with Antonio L.A. Reid at Island Def Jam Music Group. On October 2008, Justin Bieber became one of Island Records’ official artists.

Bieber’s first single, “One Time” was released on July 2009, less than a year after he signed up with Island Records. “One Less Lonely Girl” and “Love Me” were released in quick succession three months later on October, and his fourth single “Favorite Girl” hit the airwaves on November 3, 2009. All these singles entered the Top 40 of Billboard’s Hot 100 even before Bieber’s debut album, “My World” was released.

“My World”, went on sale in November 17, 2009 and peaked at Number 5 on the U.S. Billboard 200. The same album debuted at No. 1 in Canada’s Canadian Albums Chart. My World went Gold and Platinum both in the United States and Canada, and was certified Silver in the United Kingdom.

Supported by award-winning songwriters and guided by his God-fearing mother – the music industry will definitely hear more from this young man named Justin Bieber.
