Gibson to appear in upcoming Hangover sequel

by Kelly MacNeil on October 19, 2010

The Hangover was one of 2009’s most popular movies, thanks in large part to an unexpected cameo from former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson. As the release date of the the much-anticipated sequel draws near, sources have confirmed that it will feature another unlikely appearance – this time from Mel Gibson.

The New York Post reports that the embattled actor will be playing a tattoo artist in a brief, but important role. The Hangover 2 is expected to be released for Fourth of July Weekend in 2011. The film will reunite Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Ken Jeong from the first installment.

“It’s a done deal. Mel will make a cameo as a tattoo artist,” a source told the publication. “Filming is taking place on the Warner Bros. lot, where a Bangkok set has been built, and Mel is expected to film his role in two weeks.”

The move may be an effort by Gibson to mend his public perception in the wake of allegations that he abused his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. Gibson recently completed filming the Jodie Foster-directed dark comedy The Beaver, but the release date was held up after the controversy surrounding the alleged abuse.

Although the Los Angeles District Attorney has yet to decide whether or not charge Gibson with domestic abuse, the 54-year-old actor was dropped from his talent agency soon after the accusations went public. Gibson’s appearance will echo the inclusion of Tyson, who has repaired his previously damaged image by his wildly popular spoof of himself in the first film.

Filming began on the movie earlier this month, and although there are very few details available surrounding the plot, production is expected to take place in Thailand. The group gets in trouble when their shenanigans result in unplanned tattoos and other adventures.
