President Barack Obama will appear on an episode of the Discovery Channel’s MythBusters that will challenge an Archimedes legend, showcasing the president’s commitment to furthering education among America’s young students.

The television series, which typically gets its ideas from fans, uses science to determine the truth behind famous urban legends.

The episode that Obama will guest star in will investigate whether or not Greek scientist Archimedes was truly able to set fire to a Roman fleet using only rays of sun that reflected off a mirror during the Siege of Syracuse, according to ABC News.

Obama, who recently made an appearance on MTV, is set to challenge hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman to test this Archimedes legend.

MythBusters has approximately 13 million viewers a week and is very popular with 9-14-year-olds. The Obama episode will be included in the Discovery Channel’s commercial-free kids STEM television block as part of Educate to Innovate, according to the New York Times.

On Monday, October 18, Obama will host a White House Science Fair to celebrate students who have won science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competitions. He is expected to announce his MythBusters appearance at the fair.

These efforts are part of The President’s Educate to Innovate campaign launched in November 2009 to move American students to the top of the pack in science and math achievement over the next decade. President Obama has put emphasis on STEM education as necessary for laying new foundation for America’s future prosperity.

The president also recently announced a goal of recruiting 1,000 STEM teachers in the next two years.

“Strengthening STEM education is vital to preparing our students to compete in the 21st century economy and we need to recruit and train math and science teachers to support our nation’s students,” the president said in a White House statement in September.

The episode featuring Obama will air December 8 on the Discovery Channel.

International test scores in science and math found U.S. eighth-graders were outperformed by students in fourteen countries, according to
