Glenn Beck compares Norway shooting victims to Hitler Youth

Jorge Hernandez July 26, 2011

Glenn Beck has made name for himself by frequently making inflammatory statements, but his most recent comments may have crossed the line. Just days after a gunman shot gunned down dozens of Norwegian youngsters, the pundit compared the victims to Nazis.

CNN reports that Beck's main issue with the story was the fact that the summer camp where the shooting took place was run by Norway's Labour Party. Before decrying the suspected shooter as a "madman," Beck questioned what the group of teenagers was doing there in the first place.

"Sounds a little like, you know, the Hitler Youth or whatever," the conservative Tea Party favorite told his listeners. "Who does a camp for kids that's all about politics? Disturbing."

Others quick to condemn Becks comments as, among other things, baseless and insensitive. Among the chief critics of Beck was Norway's prime minister Torbjørn Eriksen, who told Britain's Daily Telegraph that youngsters interested in politics have been going to the camp for more than 60 years to learn about democracy. He called Beck's comments "ignorant, incorrect and extremely hurtful."

The Telegraph also points out that Beck himself is guilty of operating political camps through his 9/12 project. In particular, he has organized a number of so-called "vacation liberty schools" across the country to teach everything form religion to Tea Party-centric political principles.

This is certainly not the first time that Beck has raised the ire of a large swatch of the population. Early in Barack Obama's presidency, he said on Fox News that he believed Obama had a "deep-seated hatred for white people and white culture."
