It’s a girl for Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban announced the birth of their daughter, Faith Margaret Kidman Urban, on Monday after a pregnancy that has mostly been kept under wraps due to the couple's use of a surrogate mother.
According to People.com, Faith was born as their biological daughter through a gestational carrier on December 28 at the Women's Hospital at Centennial in Nashville, but Kidman and Urban chose to keep it a secret until this week, as they made no mention of it at the Golden Globes on Sunday.
"Our family is truly blessed, and just so thankful, to have been given the gift of baby Faith Margaret. No words can adequately convey the incredible gratitude that we feel for everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier," said the couple.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the couple's surrogacy is the subject of some controversy, as the pregnancy method, which involves a surrogate mother carrying another couple's fertilized egg in her uterus, has become more popular in celebrity culture. Sarah Jessica Parker and Elton John are among those who have also opted to use a surrogate mother.
According to the news source, some are critical of the dehumanizing aspect of carrying a baby that one must give up after nine months, while others laud the procedure, as the process is a viable option for women who cannot get pregnant themselves.
Faith is Kidman's fourth child and will join her sister Sunday Rose, born to Kidman and Urban in 2008, as well as her two step-siblings Isabella and Connor, whom Kidman adopted with Tom Cruise during their marriage.
