New Motorola phone: The Droid Pro
On Tuesday evening Motorola, together with Verizon Wireless, unveiled its new Droid Pro, an Android smartphone designed to rival Research in Motion’s BlackBerry Torch.
The Droid Pro bears a striking resemblance to Motorola’s Droid 2, featuring a full QWERTY keyboard under a 3.1 touchscreen, the latest Android operating software version 2.2. and a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and a dual LED flash. The phone will include a 1GHz processor, up to 4 gigabytes of memory and users will be able to read and edit Microsoft Office documents using QuickOffice Mobile Suite.
Additionally, the Droid Pro is equipped with certain features that the BlackBerry Torch lacks, and appears poised to take on the business consumer market that RIM has enjoyed for years. The Droid Pro’s battery has a higher voltage than the Torch, can display Adobe Flash elements in its browser and can share its 3G internet connection with up to five other devices via WiFi, according to PCWorld.com.
Customized to fit high-level Android users, the phone will provide customers with access to more than 80,000 applications. “The Droid Pro is setting a new standard for enterprise, allowing users to enjoy all the benefits of a smartphone with full push delivery of corporate email and corporate level security,” said Sanjay Jha, chief executive officer of Motorola Mobility, in a press release.
An exact release date and price have yet to be announced by the company. However, the phone is expected to be available during the first weeks of November, according to Free PC Guides.
Google’s operating system Android, recently took the lead in the smartphone marketshare, ahead of both the Apple iOS and RIM’s BlackBerry OS. Android is currently used by 32 percent of all users and by one in five of smartphone users in the U.S as of August 2010, according to a report from the The Nielsen Company.
