Glee honors Britney Spears, garners strong ratings
Britney may indeed be back.
The famous pop star was celebrated on Fox’s show Glee, which features covers of popular songs sung by glee club members.
Last night was the second episode of the show’s second season and it featured five Britney Spears songs, along with a cameo from the singer herself in one scene where she dressed as one of McKinley’s high school cheerleaders, known as the Cheerios.
In her quick scene, Spears talked about putting ranch dressing on pizza, which quickly segued to the wheelchair-bound character Artie singing the pop star’s 2000 hit “Stronger.”
Other songs featured in the episode were “Me Against the Music,” “I’m a Slave 4 U,” “Toxic,” and “Baby One More Time.”
The latter was Spears’ first hit and the show created a tribute to it by doing a frame-by-frame recreation of the music video featuring Rachel (Lea Michele) in the lead role. It was a way for the character to prove that she wasn’t as conservative as some think on the show.
The episode’s plot was a timely one and referenced Spears’ past concerning multiple marriages and run-ins with the law.
Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) opens the show by trying to convince his glee club members that easy listening music will help bring people in and uses Christopher Cross’ “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” as an example. The glee clubbers quickly reject the idea and instead offer up Britney Spears as a better option.
The episode also featured John Stamos in a guest star role as Carl, a dentist who is determined to get teenagers to embrace dental care at a young age.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the episode was the series’ best yet and brought in 13.3 million viewers, which dominated the night of television.
